Since we regularly work remotely on board, even during the entire holiday, good and secure internet is a must.
De Quark-Elec router does its job fantastically, but in the area of Almere to the Markerwadden the mobile range is limited, which is why we had to look for a better alternative. Then you quickly end up at Starlink.
A giant box was delivered
The order is completely online and very easy. We have chosen the roaming package, which is the best choice considering our sailing area. The monthly costs are €100, and you can pause the subscription monthly. With this subscription there is a surcharge for use on the ocean, where you pay €2,31 per GB.
Within a week the Starlink package was delivered, in a gigantic box.
Nice and fast internet!
Personally, I had to get used to the size of the antenna. However, installation is a piece of cake: you connect the router to the antenna and connect it to 220V.
After downloading the app, it’s just a matter of naming your WiFi network and setting a password. The Starlink antenna will then automatically start moving to target the satellites, and within 10 minutes you’ll have blazing fast internet.
The app indicates that it takes a while for the antenna to be fully calibrated, but despite this we immediately achieve speeds of over 200Mbps down and 20Mbps up. Great results.
Starlink does use a lot of power
We have now mounted the antenna on the gate post using a NOA OM-H rail mount. The antenna is stable and has all the space to move or go into 'rest mode'.
At night we turn off the Starlink, because it turns out to use quite a bit of power, an average of 50 watts. If we don't have shore power, the Victron Phoenix 12-250 in 'dedicated' 220V, so that the Multiplus does not have to be used unnecessarily.
The rail mount is temporary; we are still waiting for the arch, where the Starlink will get its final spot. Then we will also cut the cable and let it come in through a deck duct.
All in all we are very satisfied with Starlink: super fast and very user friendly! Really recommended.
