Sailserver logbook

The Sailserver 2! Automatic logbook for sailors

More and more often we received the request for an automatic logbook. In combination with our WiFi multiplexers and smart devices a completely logical request of course. And we ourselves had a need for it, despite the fact that the traditional logbook is in the card table we often forgot to fill it in and it was often just guesswork a few weeks later.

We have tested various apps to use in combination with the Quark-Elec devices, but none of them gave the wow feeling we were looking for. During our search we came across the SailServer 2, a beautiful device with many more interesting features than just an automatic logbook.

After a nice contact with Jorg, the inventor and producer of the Sailserver, we bought a few to test. Jorg is a passionate sailor and has won Danish and Norwegian championships in the 470 and 505 class.

After delivery we were immediately enthusiastic, the box and the way of packaging really match our sustainable way of working and thinking.

Plug & play

Commissioning is simple, just a matter of plugging the drop cable into the NMEA2000 backbone and the whole thing is immediately operational. Despite the built-in modem (prepaid SIM card) we immediately made the connection with our Starlink router. This was also quite simple and easy for a layman to do. Then it was a matter of downloading the Sailserver app, creating an account and linking everything together using a simple code.

The app itself takes some getting used to and could be improved in some areas, but it all works very well and looks graphically attractive.

The built-in GPS receiver and antenna automatically start the Sailserver with the logbook recording when the mooring lines are loose and you sail out of the box. Ideal, but as mentioned before there are more features on board! NMEA2000 data such as depth, wind speed, wind angle, battery status, water temperature, heading etc. These are not only recorded in the logbook but can also be viewed 'real-time' from home or wherever you are.

On top of that, the Sailserver also has an anchor alarm, which we are very charmed by. We are fanatic anchorers and therefore regularly go ashore. A standard anchor alarm app immediately has its limitations because they only work when you are on board. The Sailserver does not, it gives anchor alarms via text message or email even when you are not on board. The maximum drift, wind or depth alarm can all be set as desired. Really a great relief now!

Order Sailserver

And all this for a purchase price of only €89 and are there any disadvantages? No, except perhaps the subscription. The first year is free and included, then €89 per year or €249 for 3 years. Is this necessary for the functioning of the Sailserver? No, without it you miss the upload to the cloud and the option to share your trips with friends, family and acquaintances. But that does not detract from the functioning of the Sailserver. Really a top device the Sailserver 2!
