AIS Receivers
The Automatic Identification System, abbreviated as AIS, uses transponder technology to improve the safety of shipping on seas and inland waters.
This system is designed to provide overview and information through interactions between ships and with shore institutions. It was introduced in 2003 for maritime navigation, while on inland waterways Inland-AIS is used, as a supplement to the existing traffic management of traffic posts.
The benefits of AIS are significant
- It increases safety on the water.
- It offers the possibility to sail safely even in poor visibility.
- It eliminates uncertainty during maneuvers: no more doubts about whether or not to adjust course.
- The system has a wide range.
- Obstacles do not pose an obstacle, which can be the case with radar.
- Unlike radar, an AIS transponder ensures that a ship is always visible.
- AIS makes calling other vessels easier, as the vessel name and other information are transmitted.
There are different classes of AIS equipment:
- Class A: mandatory for all seagoing vessels covered by the requirements of IMO SOLAS Chapter V and in some countries also for other vessels.
- Class B: a lower cost device with limited functionality and lower transmitting power, intended for recreational boating and non-SOLAS markets.
De Quark-Elec Transponders and receivers are of high quality, offer extensive options and are also very competitively priced.
